How to Recycle PS 6 – Disposable Cups, Butter and Single Yoghurt Tubs, DVD Containers

PS 6 plastic or Rigid Polystyrene is a rigid or hard plastic and is generally recyclable.  PS 6 plastic is still used in a number of food containers such as butter containers and single yoghurt containers as well as other tub containers, disposable drink cups and opaque plastic cutlery.

   

PS 6 plastic is generally recyclable in your council bin.  

If you are the kind of person who uses disposables for BBQs and Kid’s parties, think about alternative options:

  • Go to the thrift store and buying a bunch of disconnected plates
  • Use themed plant leaves if you have access to them
  • Serve things like hot dogs in bread on a clean table cloth
  • Use your everyday crockery, glassware or ‘kidware’. If you have to transport it outside, pack it into a container. It is so much nicer to use and what is the worst that can happen to it?

PS 6 plastic stands for Rigid Polystyrene. Never reheat anything in PS 6 plastic. It has a very low melt point and all plastics emit their chemical additives as they heat.

Recycled PS 6 plastic is used to make insulation, license plate frames, rulers, moulded products, light switch plates coat hangers, office accessories, DVD cases and printer cartridges.
